Wind-Powered Cargo Ship Transports Europe's Largest Rocket

Canopée is not your ordinary cargo ship. Towering with four sails, each 121 feet high, this vessel is making waves in the shipping world. While it still relies on diesel engines, the addition of these "Oceanwings" sails makes for more environmentally friendly transport. These sails can slash fuel consumption by 50-60% in ideal wind conditions. On average, Canopée expects to save about 30% on fuel, a big deal for a ship of its size. The vessel was built in Poland and first took to the waters in the latter part of 2022.

The Mission: Carrying Europe's Space AspirationsCanopée has a special task. It's the chosen vessel for transporting parts of Ariane 6, Europe's latest and largest space rocket, across the Atlantic. This cargo is a crucial piece of Europe's space exploration puzzle, destined for the European Space Agency's spaceport in French Guiana. The vessel is expected to make eleven return trips to the region every year.

The Bigger Picture: Sustainable Seas

The International Maritime Organization is tightening the reins on shipping emissions, aiming for net zero by 2050. Innovations like Canopée's sails are pivotal in reaching these ambitious goals. With around 31 large wind-assisted ships currently in operation and more on the horizon, Canopée is part of a growing fleet leading the charge towards a greener future on the high seas.
