In November 2023, the Port of Houston experienced a significant decline in container volumes, recording a 26.7% decrease compared to the previous month.

The port saw a 15% year-over-year decline in container volumes, with a 15% decrease in loaded imports and a 2% decrease in loaded exports. Additionally, empty container exports plunged 41% year-over-year, while imports of empty containers rose 25% year-over-year. The port also saw a 4% year-over-year increase in ship calls and a 7% increase in barges calling Port Houston.

Despite these changes, Port Houston is gearing up for expansion. They recently welcomed one of their largest vessels, the CMA CGM Lisa Marie, boasting a capacity of nearly 11,000 TEUs. The port is preparing to accommodate even larger vessels in the near future by expanding the Houston Ship Channel. They're also adding wharf and yard capacity to support the growth of the entire region.
