Matheson Trucking, a key Postal Service contractor, is closing down after six decades, citing contract losses and business changes.

The Closure

  • When: Operations to end on January 31

  • Impact: Nearly 3,500 workers laid off in the past five months

Matheson Trucking, along with its subsidiaries Matheson Flight Extenders (MFE) and Matheson Postal Services (MPS), is shutting down after 60 years. The decision follows substantial contract losses and alterations in business dynamics.

The Downfall

  • Bankruptcy: Filed for Chapter 11 in May 2022

  • Contract Disputes: Financial disagreements with the U.S. Postal Service

Founded in 1962, the family-owned business expanded significantly over the last five years. However, recent challenges forced it into Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Disputes with the Postal Service over operational issues at mail sorting facilities added to the strain, with MFE alleging it was not fully compensated for operational costs.

The Aftermath

  • Facility Closures: WARN notices issued for job cuts in various locations

  • Mediation Efforts: Ongoing since May, with unresolved contract disputes

The closure impacts several facilities across the U.S., with significant job losses. Despite efforts to mediate, ongoing issues with the Postal Service led to the termination or transfer of several contracts to competitors.

Sad!

I drove for Matheson in the early 90's, it was a good company, and I enjoyed the work. Only reason I left was to long haul.

Sorry to see them go.β€” Truckster1 πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡ΈβŒ (@truckster1) December 9, 2023
